Floor tiling in Staple Hill from Dynamic Bathrooms. Floors move, so the base has to be rigid and the adhesive flexible. We prepare the subfloor first, then set out and lay the tiles.
A tiled floor is only as good as what it sits on. Loose boards get screwed down, damaged ones replaced, and any dip is levelled before tiling. Skipping this is why grout cracks and tiles work loose within a year or two of being laid.
More Information
Timber flexes, and tiles do not. Overboarding with tile backer or ply spreads the load and stiffens the floor so the tiles stay put. We also use a flexible adhesive and grout, which lets the floor move slightly without the joints letting go.
A tile that looks good dry can be treacherous wet. Bathroom floor tiles carry a slip rating, and it is worth checking before buying, especially in a wet room where the floor gets soaked. Smaller tiles with more grout lines also give more grip underfoot.
Floor tiling comes into almost every bathroom we fit, so we do it ourselves rather than bringing in a separate trade. Dynamic Bathrooms has 20 years behind it, and because we lift the floors during the plumbing anyway, the preparation and the tiling are handled as one job.

STILL NOT SURE?
Yes, once the floor has been stiffened. That usually means overboarding with tile backer or plywood, screwed down at close centres. A flexible adhesive and grout do the rest. Tiling straight onto floorboards or thin chipboard is the main reason floors crack.
Tiles and LVT both work well. Tiles are hard wearing and fully waterproof, but colder underfoot unless you add underfloor heating. LVT is warmer and softer, and forgiving on an imperfect subfloor. We fit both and will talk through which suits your room.
No, but many people add it because tiles feel cold in bare feet. Electric mats sit under the tile and are straightforward to fit while the floor is open. If you are considering it, decide before the floor goes down, because retrofitting means lifting the tiles again.
